A/W 13 Buying Trip | N.Y.C. Day 2

Wednesday March 06, 2013

View from Saturdays Surf NYC Showroom | N.Y.C.

After some much needed sleep (a recurring theme throughout the trip), we had a busy day ahead starting with Saturdays Surf NYC who have a fabulous showroom on the top floor of an old office building in Tribeca.  The 360 degree view of Manhattan was breathtaking and was almost enough of a distraction to take our minds off the job at hand, but with steely focus, we managed to work our way thru the impressive collection of casual surf inspired classics.

Along with a great selection of shirting and t's, a hooded parka caught our attention as did a wool CPO overshirt.  Saturdays has also expanded their line of footwear and of particular note was a canvas sneaker done in both high and low top that featured a colourful and very original geometric pattern.

Ovadia & Sons Showroom | N.Y.C.

Our next appointment was with Ovadia & Sons, a line started by brothers Shimon and Ariel Ovadia that we will be carrying for the first time and focuses on tailored clothing, sportswear and accessories inspired by the items that they themselves would like to have hanging in their own closets.  Obviously, their instincts for mixing luxury fabrics and impeccable tailoring with a modern twist are bang on as they were awarded GQ's Designers of the Year award for 2012.

They were clearly deserving as this was an outstanding collection anchored by blazers in gray tweed and blue herringbone, spread collar shirts in stripres and solids and ties in cotton knit and wool plaid.  There was a fabulous gold buttoned peacoat as well as a gray herringbone hooded jacket, the perfect outerwear pieces to complete the polished but not fussy Ovadia look.  We could have bought almost every piece in this collection but having to show a little fiscal restraint, we hope that you will enjoy our edit when the pieces arrive in September.

And finally, there was Orley Knits, a line of colourful sweaters and ties with a retro mid-Century modern feel designed by brothers Alex and Matthew Orley.   Inspired by artist Frank Stella, Alex and Matt wanted to produce sweaters in patterns and designs that in their own words "had never been done before" and this original line of thinking has landed their brand in cutting edge independents such as Five Storey in NYC and Union in LA.  We are excited to be the first Canadian retailer to be carrying Orley and although their sweaters won't be available til Fall, look out for their fabulous knit ties which have just arrived in-store.
