RG x Lauren Coutts
Lauren Coutts, art director and designer based in London, UK. Originally from Vancouver.
I've always been drawn to design as a direct communicative tool within the world. Incorporating personal values or views into work isn't something I often get to engage in, but am always excited by.
The phrase I've chosen to use, 'one bad apple spoils the bunch' is an idiom which I feel applies across a variety of important topics today. Wrongdoing in an organization or group, no matter how seemingly small, can easily have an overall corrupting effect on an entire system, especially if not handled promptly or efficiently. Many people in recent days have used the term 'there's only a few bad apples' in defence of the few, and I really want to put context back into the phrase; reminding back to the full idiom, that it in fact that it spoils the whole bunch. Responsibility and accountability needs to be taken as a collective group.
I would like all proceeds for this to be made towards Hogan’s Alley Society.
Hogan’s Alley Society is a non-profit organization of activists, professionals, artist, academics, and organizations committed to educating the community about the racialized and physical erasure of Hogan’s Alley: which was home to Vancouver’s Black population. HAS adopts a research driven approach rooted in historical accuracy, recognition and celebration, while building future infrastructure for BIPOC communities to equally participate in affordable, city building initiatives.
Shipping will begin July 6th, 2020.
Roden Gray Community is a shared platform of cultural connectivity. It is also a space of intersection for creative and disparate voices to come together in unified dialogue. Recent events have had us reflect on ways we could show our support. These curated, community-sourced releases are our first response to the ongoing issue of systemic racism. All purchases profits from these releases will go directly to artist chosen charities that further the greater Black Lives Matter movement.View Collection
