Nullus: Timeless, yet playful

Latin for “nothing,” reflects the brand’s philosophy: remove surface branding so the garment itself carries the meaning. This idea becomes tangible through the removal of not only the main label but also the fabric it would be attached to, leaving a hollowed-out mark—a signature written by absence.

A Neo-Classical Menswear Label from Shanghai

Founded in 2021 by two designers trained in fashion and environmental art design, Nullus is a Shanghai-based neo-classical menswear label redefining traditional masculinity. Its first collection launched in 2022 and has since been delving deeper into its core themes of contradiction, tenderness, and restraint.

Nullus articulates its design language through three principles: Flaw—visible omissions and cutouts that reveal absence as meaning; Conceal—introverted details and hidden constructions; and Placid—a sense of softness, calm, and comfort. These codes appear in warm tones, unexpected cutouts, and fluid silhouettes balanced with sharp tailoring.

Youth, Masculinity, and the Narrative of Nullus

The designers draw from their own youth—boys raised under the promise of a bright future, caught between heroes and villains, imagination and expectation. Their days moved from the sports field to music lessons, trading wild dreams for the discipline of “appropriate” attire. That tension between freedom and formality, play and control, now runs through the garments of Nullus.

Each piece explores contradictions: sensitive yet strong, powerful yet tender. In a world that pressures youth to display toughness, Nullus proposes a different path—where elegance comes from restraint, softness, and fluidity.

Garment Innovation and Material Selection

Classic tailoring meets organic lines and deconstructed detail in this collection. The Peeled Off Jacket is designed with versatile panels that can be draped, layered, or buttoned in multiple ways, adapting to the wearer’s intent.

The Detachable Lapel Jacket, true to its name, features a removable lapel that connects to the collar—transforming the silhouette entirely and even functioning as a scarf for an alternative styling option.

Fabric choice is deliberate: Bishu wools, baby mohair, cupro, linen, and blends chosen for durability and ease of wear. These materials make the pieces both refined and practical. Signature inset pockets, layered constructions, and fluid silhouettes counter sharp cuts, balancing precision with softness.

Timeless Boy Part II: Nullus FW25 and Beyond

This Season Nullus expands this philosophy by examining the expectations placed on youth, the price of ambition, and the persistence of boyhood imagination in adult life.
All men were once boys. In the face of aging, Nullus believes they never truly outgrow their youth.
